Leprechauns, Banshees, & Magic

“The Leprechauns’ Christmas Gold” is a delightful animated television special that emerged from the creative minds of Rankin/Bass. Originally aired on ABC in 1981, this whimsical holiday story weaves together Irish folklore, magical encounters, and the true spirit of Christmas.

The story follows young cabin boy Dinty Doyle, who sails home aboard the ship “The Belle of Erin” to Dublin, Ireland, just in time for the holiday season. His captain assigns him an unusual task: uprooting a pine tree from an uncharted island for use as a Christmas tree. Little does Dinty know that this seemingly straightforward mission will lead him into a world of enchantment.

On the mysterious island, Dinty accidentally releases an evil banshee named Old Mag the Hag. Mag, now free, creates a tempest to celebrate her newfound freedom. But amidst the storm, a rainbow appears—a bridge to a hidden treasure guarded by a leprechaun named Blarney Kilakilarney. Blarney, mistaking Dinty for a common thief, shares the story of how his family fell out of touch a century earlier.

Now, Dinty and Blarney must protect the hidden gold from Mag’s clutches. As the banshee schemes to obtain the leprechauns’ Christmas gold, the fate of their magical world hangs in the balance.

“The Leprechauns’ Christmas Gold” continues to enchant audiences with its timeless charm. Currently this specials is available on DVD as a part of “Classics Christmas Favorites”, available on Amazon. This heartwarming special reminds us that even in the most unexpected places, the spirit of Christmas shines bright.

So gather ’round, imagine rainbows leading to hidden treasures, and let the leprechauns’ laughter fill your heart. For in their world, Christmas gold isn’t just a precious metal—it’s a symbol of hope, love, and the magic that binds us all.
