A Day of Remembrance and Service

Every year on September 11th people observe Patriot Day to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. This day serves as a tribute to the courage shown by first responders. The day serves as a tribute to the strength of Americans who persist through adversity.

Historical Background

The extremist group al-Qaeda executed four coordinated terrorist attacks on the morning of September 11, 2001. Hijackers flew two planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and another plane into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, while passengers on United Flight 93 overwhelmed hijackers before the plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Thousands of innocent individuals lost their lives and extensive destruction followed these attacks.

Establishment of Patriot Day

Following the attacks the United States Congress established September 11th as Patriot Day. The United States recognizes this day as a national observance although it does not hold federal holiday status. The U.S. Congress established September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance in addition to Patriot Day in 2009. The designation urges Americans to give their time to community service as a way to honor both the victims and heroes of 9/11.

Commemorative Activities on Patriot Day

Across the nation multiple ceremonies and events take place on Patriot Day to memorialize those who lost their lives. These include moments of silence, particularly at 8: The moments when the North Tower was hit at 8:46 AM and the South Tower at 9:03 AM. The sites of the terrorist attacks host memorial services including the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City, the Pentagon Memorial and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania.

People observe Patriot Day as both a remembrance day and a day of service. Americans frequently engage in various volunteer activities including donating blood and cleaning their communities while offering support to veterans and first responders.
